The Company says it wants to promote work-life balance.

The Company says it wants to promote employee well-being.

The Company is all behind Ethnic-of-the-Month Month posters, and off-hours volunteering, and after-work community building, and family support, and all that good stuff. You notice that aside from the posters, all that other stuff doesn't cost The Company two red cents.

However.

When the US Gummint declares a federal holiday, and all the schools and businesses are closed, and our families have the day off, we can use up a vacation day if we want to be with everyone else. After all, if we all had a day off, it might affect shareholder value or something.

Humbug.

My company deems this a floating holiday. I'm working because I didn't on MLK Day.

Ethnic-of-the-Month Month

Is that when they put up a minority employee's face face?

We've had posters for Black American Month, Asian American Month, Latino Month, Women In Science Month, and so on. As far as I can tell, a poster in every break room and an announcement on the main internal website constitutes the entire operation.

Yeah... sounds about right.

It annoys me fiercely that whilst we are paid overtime for working the holidays we aren't given the option here of taking a day in lieu - doesn't seem right to me.

"engineers don't get overtime", and neither do computer jocks.

One group of employees recently won a major lawsuit over being required to work fifty-hour weeks with no additional compensation. The Company lost the lawsuit, paid them the back overtime they were owed, and cut their base salaries by 15%. A lot of them are gone now.

With the current one, it's a wonder ANYONE still celebrates Presidents' Day.
