Anniversary of a really fun funeral

They bored a hole in Oliver's nose
And put therein a string
And dragged him around through London town
For murdering Charles our King.

Sunday: 350th anniversary of the hanging of Oliver Cromwell, one of the central figures of the English Civil War, Lord Protector of England, and all-around hardass.  Granted, he had been dead for two months when they dug him up and hanged him, but ANYTHING to make sure that sonofabitch was dead was worth doing.

The only people who were happier than the English were the Irish.

And the Protestantism vs Catholicism that was one of the major fuels of the English Civil War was very much in the mind of the people who drafted the constitution of this country, to make damn well sure that religion and government rode different horses.  No matter what you hear recently.

Man, I either missed that detail or didn't have it taught to me in school. They probably thought it too grotesque. >:(

One of my favorite times in London was when a Scottish tour guide impassively described in detail how a disgraced king got beheaded in three chops... only to have it stitched back on when they realized he needed a portrait. I have not seen the portrait; perhaps it's best left to the imagination.

Imagine if Cromwell was as hard to kill as Rasputin...
