Just a thought

It came to me this morning as I was dropping off a pint:

I've never seen an unhappy person donate blood.  They may not all be doing a song-and-dance, but most donors seem pretty happy to be there.

Not the most profound thought of my life, but I'm pleased with it.

I was unhappy last time I tried, but that's because I wasn't allowed to do so.

My sister hasn't had good experiences with blood donation. First she couldn't give because her iron level was too low. Then she couldn't give because she had "no veins" and would require a more experienced phlebotomist. When she did give, they took too much and she needed to lie down. The fourth time, she cried from the stress. Thankfully, I've had no such trouble on my trips.

I think I know why your observation holds. Giving blood is one activity that doesn't require much effort on the donor's part but seems quite altruistic. You feel good because feeling good about yourself and future recipients is all you get out of it. Also, it could be that those who are having a bad day would rather not risk more stress by donating. Unhappiness has a way of making you lose sight of others' needs.

We're all secretly masochists. Pass it on.

Either that or we never get tired of vampire jokes.
