The Bay Area is finally getting warmer summer weather, just in time for the state-mandated 105 degrees for the first day of school Monday.

The schools do not have air conditioners.  The heaters are not turned on until December first, regardless of conditions.  The district's administration building has full-time HVAC, of course.  For the computers, poor things.

Here in Utah, where the summer temperatures top 90 and reach 100 regularly, it is almost the rule of law that school administrative buildings are centrally cooled, while schools must be ovens - and many of our schools are year-round.

Nothing's too good for the administrators...

District administration has an uncanny ability to be totally detatched from reality. I wonder if all administrators grew up in Boulder?

Does the school have a dress code that forbids shorts?

The dress code forbids a lot of things, but no one pays attention to it, so it's all right.

My school had A/C and Heating. They ran the AC in mid-winter, and the heater in the summer. That way, they didn't have to run as much, and it saved the district money.

But seriously...

I worked as a TA in the Library for a couple semesters. I am not kidding when I report that I saw snowflakes coming out of the powerful A/C vents over the reference section (my assigned area).

And the real boggler; I attended the rural high school, that was several miles out of town. But the HVAC was still controlled centrally out of the district office. Oh, and every spring, the district maintenance people would be up on the roof, laying new tar. Guess what that did to the temperature inside the building?

Mark it "General Delivery, Woodland Hills CA 91367" and ship us all you can spare... 106F yesterday, 103F today, we are supposed to get down into the high 90s for the weekend.

I graduated right after they finally decided that all the classrooms needed air conditioning too, and started retrofitting them. Timing is everything... :-(
