BART has cut the 5:15 train from 9 cars to 5. They haven't cut the number of people using it. So now I begin my day with a 45-minute ride in a cattle car, instead of sitting and reading the Chron. And my fellow patrons don't get more polite and considerate when they're jammed together, either.

As end-of-the-world events go, it's pretty minor, but it is annoying.

From a Dilbertian standpoint it makes perfect sense. From a human point of view it bites the wax tadpole. Sorry...

Few services would do something so customer-unfriendly so fast. But the travel system counts on you not having much choice.

Now in an era where the car is supposed to be combatted by public transit, the logical thing would be to *add* cars to a subway train. Of course, logic doesn't always apply.

In an economy where fewer people have jobs, there are fewer people paying the fare, and they can't afford to run trains with empty seats; empty cars burn up power. So they shorten the trains and decrease operating costs.

Thanks
That makes sense, but it sure doesn't help the stress any.
