That explains SO MUCH...

TVTropes.com defines Author's Saving Throw thus:

An especially brave idea is set forth to turn a character on his head and change the status quo in a big way... and the fans revolt. The writer then does a retcon which seems openly apologetic. This is the saving throw. It assures the fans that the character either was not in control of his actions, or he was actually a Doombot, or events were not as they seemed.

Later on, in the list of examples of AST, such as Holmes going over the waterfall (no he didn't), is this:

Jesus... From The Bible... Word Of God says he was trying to fix a Character Derailment, but it resulted in just as much backlash as before.

OTOH, once they went through that,  The Bible: New Testament  built a much bigger fanbase than The Bible: Old Testament  ever got.  The Saving Throw must have worked.

Well, whatever the case, I'm in favor of that particular retcon. If I have to face the Old Testament יהוה at judgment, my ass is toast no matter how you look at it. So I can either look forward to an eternity of blissful nothingness, or shaking hands with all my friends in Hell.

Mark Twain summed up the two sides along the lines of, So there you have it. Heaven for the climate, Hell for the society.

Considering the kinds of people who loudly announce their intention to make it to heaven at any cost, Hell may be a more desirable location.

OTOH, Simon Illyan's conclusion was that the difference between Heaven and Hell was the company you keep there.

My own impression is that since the only presence you're stuck with in EITHER place is yourself, whether you like it or hate it is going to be pretty much down to your opinion of yourself.

Ass Toast has to appear in the Banquet from Hell now, you realize.

Well said indeed. I may steal that.
